Hi, it’s me Jackie. This is my second blog post on our website. Did you think that I was going to write more than one? I wasn’t so sure because I definitely don’t finish every project that I start. But the trick is that in my first post I said I was going to do this every week. Now it’s my obligation.
Today I would like to answer a frequent question, “What is Grrrl Gang?”
I had thought about doing something for women at the venue for a while. For years at diy shows I was the lonely, awkward girlfriend of a band guy. It takes a lot for me strike up conversation with new people. I didn’t know what to say and didn’t have much to contribute to conversations about gear and hardcore bands. It was especially hard when the shows were all dudes and me. But then, some months after we opened Blank Slate the 2016 election happened. This left some of us women at Blank Slate feeling marginalized and in need of an outlet. So we finally made it happen.
People who want to make new friends and who identify as women, trans women, and/or nonbinary. It’s important to me to spell that out because we at Blank Slate take pride in being a safer space. (I’ll discuss more on how we are a safer space in the future) New members are encouraged to show up! We are friendly and will talk to you and ask you questions.
What We Do:
Once a month we invite the gang to hang out at Blank Slate to talk and sometimes to do crafts. During the meet up we spend a lot of time just updating each other on what’s going on in our lives. My favorite section that we do is called Bitch Support Group. That’s when we go around in a circle and each person gets the opportunity to bitch about something and then receive support from the group. I’ve found it cathartic to hear that my peers are going through the same struggles as me. A lot of the time we end up talking about issues at work and relationships with family. I really feel close with the others and willing to share my personal stuff because I know that they are on my side. After Bitch Support Group, I try to schedule a new activity each month. We’ve had a discussion about sex worker rights, made snow globes, and did each others makeup. To be honest I’m kind of running out of ideas so let me know if you have a good one.
Upcoming Grrrl Gang:
The next meet up is Wednesday 12/12/18 from 7- 9pm. Here’s the schedule:
7- 7:30 hellos
7:30- 8:30 bitch support group
8:30- 9 discussion about what it's like for women in the diy music scene
Wow was this a long post? Thanks for reading if you’ve made it this far. Comment if you have any questions that you would like me to answer in a blog post!
